Botswana-Baylor Fun Run 2011
The Botswana Baylor Fun Run was a huge success! On Saturday 19 November, Notwane Grounds buzzed with a great turnout of energetic and determined runners and dedicated volunteers. Runners, joggers, strollers and dog-walkers pounded the pavement for 13K in support of Botswana Baylor’s plans to build an Adolescent Centre. Gold, silver and bronze medals were given to the fastest runners, and prizes were announced for lucky raffle winners! Generous sponsors made the day go smoothly and safely with donations of water, fruit and sports drinks.
THANK YOU to the over 200 people who registered! We are now one step closer to meeting our goal and building the Botswana Baylor Adolescent Centre!

2011-2012 Fundraising Drive
The cheer “Teen Club Rocks!”, or “Teen Club Ya Chesa” in the local Setswana language, can be heard on the last Saturday of every month at the Gaborone Teen Club, a support group for HIV-positive adolescents at Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence. Teen Club is a peer support group intervention for HIV-positive adolescents currently operating in Botswana’s capital city, Gaborone, as well as a growing number of satellite sites throughout the country. The mission of Teen Club is “to empower HIV-positive adolescents to build positive relationships, improve self-esteem and acquire life skills through peer mentorship, adult role-modeling and structured activities, ultimately leading to improved clinical and mental health outcomes as well as a healthy transition into adulthood.” We also implement an annual camp for pre-adolescents called Camp Hope, offer daily Tutoring Sessions and plans are underway to develop an Adolescent Centre that will provide educational activities and counselling services for our adolescent patients.
In the past few years, Teen Club attendance has grown from 5 to over 850 adolescent members. In addition to our support group in Gaborone, we now operate at six additional satellite sites, with more in development! We are actively providing life skills education in addition to our recreational and social activities, and the repeat attendances from our adolescent patients speak for themselves. Our teens have demonstrated improved mental, social and physical wellbeing, giving them a strong foundation for a healthy transition into adulthood.
The generous financial support of private individuals and groups has been, and continues to be, vital to the growth and expansion of the Teen Club programme.
If you would like to support our programming financially, here is a breakdown of sponsorships costs for our ongoing and prospective activities:
- Sponsorship for transport for 1 teen to attend 1 year of Teen Club events: P420 ($65)
- Sponsorship for 1 satellite Teen Club event (90 teens): P6,120 ($940)
- Sponsorship for 1 Gaborone Teen Club event (220 teens):P15,000 ($2,300)
- Sponsorship for 1 satellite Teen Club for 1 year: P73,500 ($11,300)
- Sponsorship for Gaborone Teen Club for 1 year: P144,000 ($20,000)
- Furniture and equipment costs for our Adolescent Centre: P770,000 ($120,000)
- Refurbishment and construction costs for our Adolescent Centre: P2,300,000 ($352,000)
